Synopsis
In this study, the fascinating phenomenon of metrosexuality has been
deconstructed from various perspectives, attempting to uncover the layers of meaning it engenders.
The first part of the pamphlet aims at achieving a preliminary understanding of the contemporary conceptual
category of metrosexuality in the western context - its defining characteristics; emergence and evolution;
the causal factors behind the same; a brief account of icons of metrosexuality; and its implications,
significance and evaluation.
The second part focuses on metrosexuality in the Indian context.
It points out that Indian men have traditionally been 'metrosexual' and then elucidates how this
traditional metrosexuality faded away as a result of contact with the modern masculine west, through colonisation.
And finally, it talks about the arrival of contemporary (western) metrosexuality in India,
thanks to a 'globalising' world. Indeed, a fascinating exploration, analysis, critique, ridicule, appraisal
and celebration of metrosexuality!
